|Samenvatting||The European Commission has published details as to how it intends to put its Strategic Action Plan on Road Safety into practice. This includes a first list of key safety performance indicators (KPI), elaborated in close cooperation with Member States, that will be monitored across the EU to underpin the target of 50% reduction in fatalities and serious injuries by 2030. The list (including indicators like vehicle safety, seat belt wearing rate, speed compliance and post-crash care) is a living document that will be developed further over time. In May 2018, as part of the 'third Mobility Package', the Commission published the outline of a road safety policy framework 2021-2030 and a Strategic Action Plan. Today's publication joins these elements together, connects them with the relevant KPIs and maps out the way forward, employing the Safe System approach for the first time systematically at the EU level. Urgent action on road safety is needed: more than 25.000 people die on European roads every year – a figure that has hardly decreased over recent years – and we need to make serious inroads into this figure by 2030 in order to meet the EU’s long term strategic goal of 'Vision Zero', i.e., no deaths and serious injuries on European roads by 2050. In the 'Europe on the Move' package in May 2018, the European Commission put forward a new approach to EU road safety policy, along with a medium term Strategic Action Plan2.
