|Samenvatting||Hardcore drunk drivers are individuals who drive with a blood alcohol concentration of .15 or above, who have more than one drunk driving arrest, and who are highly resistant to changing their behaviour despite previous education efforts, treatment or sanctions. This article describes efforts by The Century Council to develop strategies and tactics to more effectively address hardcore drunk drivers. The Council has worked with other members of the traffic safety community to implement programs and enact effective state laws to address hardcore drunk driving. They have developed a sourcebook that includes information on a broad range of policies, laws, sanctions and treatment programs. Since the judicial system plays a critical role in reducing hardcore drunk driving, the Council also has developed a guide aimed at the judiciary that outlines the issue of hardcore drunk driving, effective strategies and model programs. The Council is also encouraging states to adopt self-sustaining, offender-funded systems to fund local drunk driving prevention programs.|
