Samenvatting Accidents caused by inattentive drivers cause a significant negative impact on society. In a current European Union project within the Seventh Framework program called HAVEit (Highly Automated Vehicles for Intelligent Transport), Volvo are pushing current state- of-the- art safety technology bydeveloping systems which assist drivers in situations where they are likely to become inattentive. Specifically, one HAVEit work package called Automated Queue Assistance (AQuA) focuses on supporting the driver in slow, congested traffic on motorways (ie. queues). The system will assist by providing greater automation: integrated lateral and longitudinal vehicle control. Such levels of automation demand excellent sensory perception of the vehicle and its environment. This paper will discuss the challenges of developing the sensory perception subsystem.
